For the person who has everything, or for someone with a strong social conscious, the gift of a World Vision loan to help a family in poverty to start a business is an interesting idea. World Vision Canada is a development charity that provides education, health care, economic development and promotion of justice support in poor communities around the world. A loan of $100 can help a woman start a business in a field such as baking, sewing or weaving, that really makes a difference in her life, said Jan Bargout, communications manager for World Vision Canada.

“Once the business is up and running they repay the loan, and that $100 is loaned to another family in the area to start a business,” Bargout said, adding that 97 per cent of the loans are repaid on time.

There are countless charities that depend on donations to survive and a donation to charity is a feel-good gift for both giver and receiver.
